When you build a custom role, you choose from the capabilities below. Each one grants the ability to manage a part of the app manager. They’re organized into three groups: Content, Organization, and Administration.
Content
| Capability | What it lets the role manage |
|---|---|
| News Articles | Create, edit, and delete news stories. |
| News Feeds | Manage the external RSS feeds pulled into Latest News. |
| Events | Create and manage events, including recurring event series. |
| Info & Resources | Manage resources (documents, links, pages) and the categories/folders that hold them. |
| Contracts | Manage contracts. |
| Directories | Manage directories and their members. |
| People | Manage people (directory entries). |
| Push Notifications | Compose and send push notifications. |
| Custom Forms | Build and manage custom forms and quizzes, and view their submissions. |
| Job Opportunities | Manage job postings. Only appears if your local has job opportunities enabled. |
Organization
These capabilities cover your union’s structure. They let a role add, rename, and remove containers — but not the content filed inside them. (For example, Bargaining Units lets someone create and rename units; it does not let them post the news or events inside a unit — that’s the News Articles or Events capability.)
| Capability | What it lets the role manage |
|---|---|
| Bargaining Units | Add, rename, and remove bargaining units. |
| Groups | Manage group details and who belongs to them. |
| Locations | Manage locations (offices) and their sublocations. |
Administration
| Capability | What it lets the role manage |
|---|---|
| Users & Devices | Manage member accounts and their devices — including verifying members and assigning roles. |
| Local Settings | Edit the local’s settings (Union Settings) and manage Roles & Permissions. |
Which capabilities can be limited to specific audiences
Only content that belongs to a bargaining unit, group, or location can be limited by audience. These capabilities can be scoped: News Articles, News Feeds, Events, Info & Resources, Contracts, Directories, Push Notifications, and Custom Forms.
Everything else — People and all Organization and Administration capabilities — is union-wide by nature and can only be granted to a role that applies to All members.
What the built-in roles include
- Administrator — every capability in all three groups.
- Content manager — every Content and Organization capability, but not Users & Devices or Local Settings. A content manager can edit content and structure but can’t manage member accounts, devices, or roles.
